Geotextile output expected to reach 730,00 tonnes by 2015

During the China Geotextiles Composite Materials Summit 2011 held in Lingxian, Shandong, it was announced that in 2010, China's output value of geotextiles reached 405,000 tonnes, and during the next five years, it is anticipated to maintain a double-digit growth annually, reaching 730,000 tons by 2015.

During 2006-2010, China's output of geotextiles saw a yearly average growth rate of 35.3%, which was 20% higher than that of the entire technical textile industry (16%).

This is thought to be a result of China's hefty investment on infrastructure. As a number of major infrastructure projects, including the Three Gorges Dam, South-to-North Water Diversion, Qinghai-Tibet Railway and Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, have commenced or will start operation in the next few years, there will be a continuously growing demand for geotextile fabrics.

According to Li Lingshen, President of China Nonwovens and Industrial Textiles Association (CNITA), in the next few years, China will further increase its investment in major infrastructure projects such as railways, highways, airports, and water conservancy and environmental protection projects, and each of them will have a continuously growing demand for geotextile fabrics.

Mr Li further said that China will become the world's biggest sales market for geotextile composite materials. At present, China's consumption of geotextile fabrics has surpassed 300 million sq. meters, and nonwoven geotextile fabrics make up around 40% of the total volume of nonwoven fabrics in the country.

Geotextiles and construction textiles are emphasized in China now, being listed as major items for development under the application category during China's 12th Five-year Plan.
