Dow Corning to
offer presentation at IFAI Advanced Textiles 2008
Dow Corning Corporation’s Senior Technical
Service Chemist Graham Budden will be presenting “The Active
Protection System: A Smart Impact Protection Textile” at the
IFAI Advanced Textiles 2008 symposium this June.
Budden will discuss key features and
benefits of the Dow Corning® Active Protection System, the
patented “smart” technical textile that provides an
unprecedented combination of defense and comfort for personal
impact-protection applications. The fabric remains soft and
flexible under normal conditions, but hardens instantly upon
impact to absorb and distribute energy over the entire
protective area.
When the impact force is removed, the
material immediately returns to a flexible state. Since the
delivery form is a textile on a roll, the Active Protection
System offers considerable design versatility. It can be cut
into different shapes and sizes, built up in layers, and fully
integrated into apparel.
In October 2006, Rukka, a Finland-based
manufacturer of sports apparel, launched the first commercially
available product to use Active Protection System fabric: the
SRO Anatomic motorcycle riding suit. Budden will discuss the
case study behind this product launch. He will also present
applications beyond motor cycling for the Active Protection
System.
