Imported cotton from Sudan to bridge shortage

Turkish Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Mehdi Eker said that Sudan holds an important position in the world for its cotton yield and Turkey as key cotton producer, has been facing a shortage of quality cotton for quite some time, for the manufacture of textiles and apparel. Now, the country wants to benefit from Sudan’s potential in the same.

The Agriculture Minister also mentioned that imports from Sudan would help to bridge the shortage of cotton the textile industry is facing presently.

He further said that agriculture is considered to one of the pillars of Sudanese economy and Turkey is ready to work with Sudan in other sectors where the country needs development. Both the nations are already enjoying a healthy economic relationship for over past eight years. Statistics show that, during 2006, Turkey has invested around US $220 million in Sudan.
